Spiders Under the Bed

July 1st, 2015

Two days ago I woke up as usual but instead of getting up I decided to go back to sleep.  During that brief time I had a dream that has already come to pass.  While I by no means share every dream and experience, I do share what I believe the Lord wants me to so that others can benefit.

The Dream

In the dream I was standing in my bedroom when suddenly I saw a large spider about the size of a dinner plate on the floor beside my bed.  I ran to the kitchen to get a broom to deal with the spider but when I got back I couldn't find it.  It was then that I noticed that my wife was sound asleep in the bed and I grew afraid not knowing where the spider was.  Suddenly I realized that the spider was under the bed.  I looked under the bed and sure enough it was there.  As I began pushing on it with the broom to try and drive it out, suddenly I realized that there was not just one but three spiders under the bed.  I kept hitting at them to drive them out from under the bed and towards the sliding glass door on the other side of the bed.  As they began to scurry out from under the bed, I suddenly realized that the door wasn't open wide enough for them to get out.  I was able to open it just wide enough for them to get out and then I closed it behind them.  As I watched from inside I saw them climb up the glass and disappear from my sight.  However, almost immediately after I lost sight of the three spiders, a much larger spider (the body was about the size of a beagle) came running towards me from the outside.  Instead of coming after me, I somehow knew that the larger spider was chasing after the smaller spiders, intending to punish them.  Before the larger spider could disappear from my sight however, suddenly a Scottish Terrier came from nowhere and stood in front of the larger spider, sniffing it.  I saw the spider bare its fangs to bite the Terrier but it could not, nor could it move.

Interpretation & Application

As soon as the dream was over I woke up, knowing that this was a warning dram from the Lord.  However, I was totally unprepared when less than an hour later the actual spiritual attack prophesied in this dream happened.  With the help of the dream,  I was able to get my family through the situation with only minor difficulty.

The first thing to understand is that in the dream the sliding glass door was already open, meaning that it started when either I or my wife created an opening to the enemy.  In the natural we don't have a sliding glass door in our bedroom, but we do have one elsewhere.  However, two things stood out to me.  The first thing is that the sliding door in my dream was flipped from what it actually is in the natural, meaning wrong thinking or misunderstanding.  The second thing is that the sliding door was next to my side of the bed, meaning that I, in some way, am responsible for leaving the door open.

The three smaller spiders represent demonic spirits sent to take advantage of the situation.  Even though the door is open just a little bit, they are, at first, small enough to come through the opening.  The fact that they are so much larger later made me realize that they had been there for quite some time, spinning webs (lies, misunderstandings) and feeding (making small things seem worse or larger than they actually were).  When I see the first spider, it was surprised that I saw it, so obviously these spiders were working hard to remain hidden (under the bed).  It was the Holy Spirit that revealed the presence of the spider to me, and let me know where it had hidden.  I am not sure why I did not see the spiders (or the open door) before then; but pride often blinds us to danger.

The bedroom and bed represent rest, peace, and intimacy.  The spiritual attack was clearly against my marriage, and to cause unrest and division.  My wife being asleep on the bed symbolizes being unaware, even unconcerned.  As hard as marriage is, we need to remain diligent to not let "the small foxes spoil the vines" (SoS 2:15).

While in the natural it seems reasonable to use a broom against spiders, I still prayed and looked and I found this: "and I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” declares the Lord of Hosts. Isaiah 14:23b.

In the dream I had to open the sliding door wider to let the spiders out before I could close it.  In the natural, the situation represented by the door being open actually got worse before it got better.  It took humility and repentance on my part to help diffuse and bring love and understanding into the situation caused by the spiritual attack (closing the door).

The larger spider appearing after the flight of the smaller ones clearly indicates that the smaller spiders were sent not only to exploit the opening but as part of a larger plan against my marriage and family.  The fact that the larger spider was going to punish the smaller was indicated to me that the enemy's plan had been exposed and failed.  The Scottish Terrier "sniffing out" (discerning) and being able to stop the larger spider represents angelic intervention.  In the natural, Scottish Terriers are "described as a territorial, feisty dog, they can make a good watchdog and tend to be very loyal to their family" (Wikipedia).

Even though this specific dream was meant was a warning to my family, I have posted it here in hopes that it will help someone else.  It is, of course, best to never leave any open doors for the enemy to come in.  But know that even if the enemy does get in, the Holy Spirit and the angels are always there to help us.  However, it takes trusting the Lord, humility and the willingness to repent of our own mistakes.

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."  Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.  James 4:6-7
